With right side facing, pick up 1 st in each hole and slide onto a knitting needle.
Row 1 and all odd numbered rows: purl all sts.
Row 2: knit all sts.
Row 4: sl 2 sts as if to k, k sl sts tog, k 63, k 2 tog 65 sts.
Row 6: sl 2 sts as if to k, k sl sts tog, k 61, k 2 tog 63 sts.
Next row: k 1, p 1, k 1, bind off 3 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1.
Work 3 rows even, end wrong side.
Next row: k 2 tog, rib 5, k 2 tog 7 sts.
Next row: k 2 tog, rib 3, k 2 tog 5 sts.
Last row: k 2 tog, p 1, k 2 tog, bind off rem 3 sts.
Sew button to front of towel opposite buttonhole.
Weave in any ends.
Cast on 64 sts and knit 3 rows.
Rep rows 1 and 2 twice more.
Row 7: rep row 2.
Row 8: rep row 1.
Rep rows 2 and 1 twice more.
This completes one pattern.
Do a total of 8 patterns then start the shaping.
Row 1: k2 tog across32 sts.
Row 2: knit across.
Row 3: k2 tog across16 sts.
Row 4: knit across.
Row 5: k2 tog k to last 2 sts, k2 tog.
Knit 19 rows even.
Row 25: rep row 5 of shaping.
Row 27: knit across.
Bind off and sew button on.
I usually tie it on with the same yarn i used to knit the towel.
